Embark on a stunning photographic journey across the gorgeous country of Japan with The Japan Book as your marvelous travel guide. Featuring a remarkable collection of lovingly curated images that respectfully highlight the traditions, culture, gardens, cities, and natural wonders of Japan, this book doubly serves as an educational primer and vibrant portrait of a prominent nation.
Behold the serene dignity of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and festive swan boats of Ueno Park, two delicate jewels tucked in the concrete heart of booming Tokyo. As esteemed photographer Christopher C. Lee pursues the cherry blossom front up the archipelago, watch springtime culminate in a dazzling barrage of gentle pink petals and yellow flowers along an endless road at Yoshimi Sakura Tsutsumi Park, and at night, witness the enchanting sight of cherry blossom trees illuminated from beneath at Chidorigafuchi Park.
The Japan Book expresses striking contrasts of new and old. One photo shows modern-day pedestrians strolling across a bridge behind which the powerful Hiroshima Peace Memorial looms, while another depicts kids casually playing in the old ruins of Hiroshima Castle. As you turn the pages, each singly dedicated to establishing a scene, you will come across resolute fishermen in the waters of Lake Kawaguchiko, townsfolk praying at Shiogama Shrine, kimono-clad women posing in front of the Yasaka Pagoda, and more. Visually experience Mt. Fuji far away from across a lake and up close at Komitake Shrine. Take a peek at the breathtaking Kenroku-en Garden, one of Japan's Three Most Beautiful Gardens.
The photographs in this book were taken on a solo backpacking trip spanning hundreds of miles and carefully chosen from an original pool of thousands of pictures. The Japan Book covers select locations from the regions of Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Ishikawa, Yamanashi, Saitama, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamagata, Miyagi, Aomori, and Hokkaido. A quintessential work exhibiting an insider's perspective of Japanese culture through the lens, The Japan Book is one of the best books for seeing Japan and is a welcome contribution to the world of travel photography.
Please note The Japan Book edition will have enlarged font for compatibility and easier reading in devices.

To start things off, the cover image of The Japan Book is a photograph that I’d like in large print on my living room wall. This sentiment was shared across almost all the gorgeous images of Christopher Lee as I flipped through his photo book. It was obvious that much love and care was taken in sorting out the images and that he wanted to display the best of Japan through this book.I particularly enjoyed the preface by the author as it set the right atmosphere for the visual content. The images are striking and masterfully composed, each subtly expressing a theme of grandeur, novelty, or exquisiteness to the subjects and locations that they describe. An image of the Kenroku-en Kumagai-Zakura (an enormous cherry blossom tree in the midst of Kenroku-en garden) shows the tree at the pink climax of its bloom, in full springtime splendor. The image next to it portrays four elderly men chatting and resting peacefully on a bench overlooking a lake, as if reminiscing about good times. One of my favorites is a photo of Mt. Fuji across Lake Motosu, taken from a perspective that coincides with the picture of Mt. Fuji and Lake Motosu on the Japanese thousand yen banknote. There’s a photo of a cherry blossom tree across a pond at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden that looks like a reflected mirage - it’s rather ethereal and breathtaking.
Each image embodies an elegance that needs to be fully experienced by the reader through the physical print. If you choose to give this photo book a try, definitely buy the paperback and it’ll be worth it. It is a photo book with a certain allure, appreciated by family and friends, which constantly attracts the reader back for another look through its pages. Buy The Japan Book if you want an amazing photographic experience of Japan. It is a keeper.
